This September marked the first year anniversary for my children’s books, The Magic in Boxes. It has been one year since 2000 copies arrived on my doorstep and my life as an author/illustrator/independent publisher began.
I celebrate this milestone by reflecting on all the great opportunities that have come my way.
I was fortunate to receive the support from my local newsagent/bookstore Nextra Tombul, who kindly showcased my book for a 5 day book launch. This was my introduction to the world of retail and I am extremely grateful (although I was completely terrified at the time) for this initial platform to present my book to the local community.
Returning to my hometown, St George, to inspire a future generation was one my greatest thrills. Encouraging children to dare to believe that kids from the bush can take a risk and follow their dreams successfully. I visited the local Kindergarten, two Primary Schools and was a guest speaker in the local town library.
Presenting story time in nine Brisbane City Council Libraries was a wonderful chance to share my book with the Brisbane community. After a decade and a half of working as an Infants Teacher, I realized I greatly missed the interaction with little people. I can’t deny the buzz I felt when seeing my book displayed on library shelves throughout Brisbane libraries and the enjoyment on the children’s faces when sharing my story with them.
I have been fortunate to be featured in numerous newspaper and family magazine articles.
Receiving praise when reviewed from the Book Council of Australia and parenting expert Maggie Dent helped me feel validated in my career choice. Early Childhood Careers and Teachers have been among my greatest supporters and it was a wonderful surprise when The Magic in Boxes was listed in the Premier’s Reading Challenge Booklist 2016: Early Childhood Booklist. I have greatly enjoyed visiting daycare centres in Brisbane and Ipswich – one of which engaged in a weeklong box play focus inspired by my book.
It was a great honor to be the Book Week Author in both Kelvin Grove College and Virginia State School this year. I was able to share my publishing journey with the children and talk about the important role being a supportive friend can have on achieving goals.
Five Catholic University students created a stage play around The Magic in Boxes, which was performed in front of a very excited kindergarten audience. I was lucky enough to see their performance and create a video.
Presenting as a guest speaker in a local networking group was another wonderful opportunity for me. Inspiring other Mums to take a risk and encouraging them to follow their dreams is close to my heart.
A recent stock take revealed I have sold over 1400 copies since the release date. I may not be listed as a best seller, but I think it has been a good start.
I am now looking ahead to the next twelve months and wondering where that will take me. Hopefully my second book, The Magic in Dress-Ups will be released early 2017, along with a third unrelated children’s book, which is in the pipeline later that same year.
Thank you for your support and I hope you watch this space …
